Overview of the Wind Energy Sector in India



India has a vast supply of green energy resources, and has a significant program for deploying these resources. An exclusive ministry for renewable energy called Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources later renamed as Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNES) has also been set up.



According to the recent report on Renewable Energy in India from India-Reports, the Renewable Energy market in India is pegged at US$600 million, growing at 15% per annum. The Government’s renewable energy target by 2030 is 200 gigawatts, estimated to require US$200 billion in capital investment. Currently, 3.5% of installed capacity is in the renewable sector, producing 3700 MW. Renewable energy is projected to produce 10,000 MW by 2012.



Wind  Energy in India



India is one of the fastest growing markets for wind energy and is next only to Germany in terms of growth. The estimated potential for wind energy generation in India is 20,000 MW. But currently only 600 MW is being generated.



The Government is offering attractive buy-back rates to encourage wind power generation by individuals and private parties.



The first wind turbines to installed were near Okhra in Gujarat.



Wind Energy has the lowest gestation period compared to conventional power and low operating costs. Capital costs for setting up a wind generation unit are estimated to be between Rs 4.5 crore to Rs 5.5 crore.



Major trends in wind energy generation in India



Some of the major trends in Wind Energy Generation in India are



1. Installation of high capacity machines of upto 1 MW as opposed to the earlier used low capacity 225 or 250 KW machines
2. Windmills without gearbox, having synchronous generator linked to inverter controls. This reduces transmission loss, offers quick response to wind change and optimizes generation.

I'm starting a "green kids" club for elementary students. What do you think of the course description?

Green is the new black. Protecting the environment and making our earth a better place to live is a major local and global concern. The Green Kids program will teach students how to minimize their impact on the earth through recycling, saving energy, minimizing consumption, and caring for the environment around them. Through a variety of lessons, activities, and projects, students will measure their own carbon footprint and learn ways that they can personally impact our fight on global warming and live a more sustainable lifestyle. By participating in this program, students will understand the importance of green living habits, and become inspired agents of change, working toward a better future for our earth.


I would want to know what specific activities are planned for the club.

Where can I go to invest in stock?

I would like to invest in Solar Thermal energy. Honestly, I don't know too much about how this stuff works... Obviously. Anyway, Bill Gates sort of prompted me to invest in this even though he said it would be a bad one. I've got no clue what his motive would be for saying that, but an obsession of mine is the interpretation of body language of all sorts. He said not to invest in solar energy with his words but yes with his body.

He was present at some Columbian Business School town hall meeting on CNBC, and the question was raised about investment in green energy.


Wouldn't it be interesting to find out where Bill Gates is actually putting his money, not just what he says.

What is Green Energy?

Green Energy is a form of energy that originates from a process or manner that has a less negative impact to the environment than other energy sources. Fossil fuels, one example of an energy produced with a harmful side effect to the environment.




What are the types of green energy?




There are few green energy types which includes solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, nuclear energy and hydro energy. Let us differentiate them to understand their distinction.




1.       Solar energy – It is a form of green energy that has been harnessed by humans since ancient times. This kind of energy uses the radiant light and heat from the sun. This kind of energy is being used today most especially from small island that doesn't have electricity yet.




2.       Wind Energy – This kind of energy form is a conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy. There are cities in different countries that use this kind of form of energy in order to sustain their energy need. Wind energy uses wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage or sails to propel ships etc…




3.       Geothermal Energy – Geothermal, from its root words geo which means earth and thermos which means heat is thermal energy stored in the earth. Geothermal energy is a kind of energy source that determines the temperature of matter. The Geothermal energy of the earth originates from the original formation of the planet; it comes from the radioactivity decay of minerals, from volcanic activity, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface.




4.       Nuclear Energy – This kind of energy is produces by controlled non expensive nuclear reactions. Commercial and utility plants currently use nuclear fission reactions to heat water to produce steam which is then used to generate electricity.




5.       Hydro Energy – Hydro energy or what others call hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower. The production of electrical power through the use of gravitational force of falling or falling water. It is the most widely used form of green energy.




The ultimate goal of green energy is by and large create energy with as little as pollution as possible produced as a by-product. We cannot deny that every form of energy collection will result in some pollution or destruction to the atmosphere or environment. Nevertheless, green form of energy are well known for contributing less negative impact than those other form of energy.




What is the purpose of Green energy?




We all know that aside from air that we need in order to live, energy is something that this world should not run out in order to continue its every advance. This planet is incessantly being destructed by human without them knowing it for the longer time. Greenhouse gases, an example of a by-product of traditional sources of energy such as fossil fuels are thought to be causing the frightening global warming. It is incontestable that mother earth is heating up in a hasten pace which is why the demand for green energy sources are implausibly growing.




What are the other sources of green energy?




Aside from solar, wind nuclear, hydro and geothermal form of energy, a green energy source can be a building that is designed in a way that it keeps itself cool in the daytime in order to conserve electricity. This kind of architecture or building design will let you have a fine temperature at daytime and heated in the night through its architecture rather than having air-conditioning or heating system. The conservation of energy through architectural design becomes itself a source of green energy.




Likewise there is another way for to conserve energy, for example a community or small town can be covered with solar panels for the purpose of collecting energy to be used for generating energy. There are problems that we are facing regarding energy concerns and it is good to know that there are alternatives that we can use that produces less negative effect to the environment. I was quite amaze by the fact the energy can be derived from these given God's grandeur and just recently I have stumbles upon another form of green energy: the waste to green energy.




Waste to Green energy: What is it?




Waste to green energy is a form of green energy source that derived from garbage. How is it possible? With the technology called biosphere, garbage is being converted to energy through a process that harnesses the combustibility of waste to create a heat source that produce an extremely hot stream that will then generate green energy.




We are all aware that waste is one of the foremost problems that we have. It is one cause of multiple illnesses and catastrophes that we continuously countenance. Land depletion is the number one problem that we encounter because of landfills for hoarding waste which is why this type of green energy source is something that shouldn't be ostracized.




One Goal of Green energy or green technology is to take obtainable fossil fuel energy technology and clean it up by focusing alternative form of energy that is greener and cleaner. The success of each type of energy depends upon the aptitude to take out damaging by-products from fossil fuels while not only being energy efficient but by being able to produce cost efficient green energy that doesn't compromise environmental conservation.

The Monarch School's Chrysalis achieved Gold certification under the US Green Building Council's LEED for New Construction Rating System - making Monarch the highest rated LEED certified K-12 school in Texas.




Head of School and Founder Dr. Marty Webb said, "We are delighted to have achieved such high scores from both green building programs, especially since we started pursuing DEES and LEED certifications late in our design process. We are already pursuing the ENERGY STAR label and LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance certification." Only two other K-12 schools in Texas are registered for LEED-EB.




Monarch's Executive Board President David Matthiesen said, "We wanted to build green but we thought LEED and ENERGY STAR would cause exorbitant costs. Ultimately, we took a fact-based leap of faith, and learned firsthand that building green is economical, practical, meaningful and relevant to students, particularly ours with autism / Asperger's, attention deficit and hyperactivity, and other neurological disorders."




The school's sustainability expert and advisor Mark Robinson, founder of Momentum Bay, a Houston-based green management consulting and marketing boutique, confirmed the business case that encouraged the board, design team and construction team, "Early studies like Greg Kats' 'Greening America's Schools: Costs and Benefits' (2006) and others show that students in other green schools achieved better test scores, attendance and health. These schools enjoyed 20 times more lifecycle benefits than the small zero-to-two percent upfront premium for green building back then. Given the nation's cumulative 12-year experience on 10,000+ ENERGY STAR labeled buildings, and nearly 5,000 LEED certified projects, it was clear that sustainable best practices could yield even greater savings for Monarch."




Ensuring a safe environment for students and reducing long-term operating costs through energy efficiency were central to Chrysalis' green building strategies. Energy modeling and ENERGY STAR's Target Finder tool confirmed both. Chrysalis is projected to prevent 33 percent more greenhouse gas emissions than a conventionally designed K-12 school, and use 33 percent less energy, saving more than $170,000 on utility bills over the next 25 years. These savings are worth more than a 13 percent discount on all design professionals' fees.




Shelly Pottorf, the project's lead architect said, "Being in a sustainable environment provides a significant advantage to the development of children with special education needs, like Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), the prevalence of which has soared from 1 in 1000 (1990) to 1 in 100 children (2010). The Monarch School's results suggest that learning and playing on a green campus in sustainable classrooms would reasonably benefit all children, families and even faculty." Pottorf added, "Daylighting, outdoor views and better air quality - possibly the most critical green building strategies for healthy buildings - have been shown to improve students' health, attendance, test scores and overall productivity. In fact, these are the discoveries driving green school initiatives such as LEED for Schools, ASHRAE's Advanced Energy Design Guide, and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools."




The Monarch School will maintain healthier indoor air via green cleaning practices and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. After their first year in the new green school, teachers are already noticing improvements. Exposure to indoor air pollutants could have diminished students' ability to focus.




The new special education facility is also serving Monarch as a teaching tool about sustainability and the environment. The students even interviewed Mayor Annise Parker about her plans for greening Houston.




Science teacher Richard Klein added, "Monarch's curriculum integrates sustainability and clean tech with science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET) and other disciplines via several hands-on activities that teach leadership, entrepreneurship, neighborly respect and hospitality, as well as resource conservation for the great outdoors."




As it prepares to complete its green campus with two additional greener buildings, The Monarch School hopes that its underdog success story will inspire other schools. Monarch hopes that others will obtain their best possible grades for student performance by certifying independently building design, construction, operations and fiscal performance.




One parent commented, "Students typically receive objective feedback - grades and recognition from their teachers - when they overachieve. So, why wouldn't all of the United States' 105,000+ public and private K-12 schools pursue the same, bringing home a 'special' education report card to parents every year?"

New Codes and Standards Drive Green Building Success – and Future

Green building is all about performance, explaining why savvy building professionals are so focused on data and measurement today. Whether it's R-values, efficiency ratings, or solar heat-gain coefficients, comparisons of product and system performance are central to sustainable design.




These evaluations invariably start with building codes and standards – the authoritative benchmarks of performance. Whether it's the International Codes, ASTM standards or ASHRAE 90.1, codes go everywhere that LEED and other voluntary programs don't. "The codes are the foundation of any sustainable building strategy," says Allan Bilka, RA, a senior staff architect with the International Code Council (ICC). "Green and sustainable building rating systems would be ineffective without this foundation."




Yet while many architects know how important code evaluations are, programs like LEED – though only applied to a tiny fraction of the building stock – remain foremost in their minds. Is the basis of green building getting lost in the shuffle? Experts in codes and green building worry that's the case, and they encourage building teams to get back to basics.




Take ASHRAE 90.1, for example, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers energy standard that covers everything from boiler efficiency to lighting to fenestration. The 2007 version of this energy mandate also calls for "air sealing" of joints and openings, a standard that underlies new rules on air barriers requirements adopted by many state codes. NIST projects that air barriers will cut natural gas and electricity use by about 40 percent and 25 percent, respectively – a huge reduction in our carbon footprint.




Not only will air barriers slash carbon emissions and improve indoor environmental quality (IEQ), but also they'll become central to greener performance. No surprise, then, that new standards on air-tightness and leakage rates are being developed by ASTM.




 




An international green code




 




While air barriers are big news, the biggest announcement in green building came from the ICC last year, when they unveiled the new International Green Construction Code (IGCC). Developed with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and ASTM International, the IGCC will help architects meet the AIA's "2030 Carbon Neutrality Goal" and, through ASTM, strengthen the scientific basis of green building.




 




The IGCC will be the first model code for new and existing buildings that mandates performance and prescriptive solutions. Also involved in its development were ASHRAE, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The new code won't be final, however, until 2012.




 




Still, project teams can start today with an alternative jurisdictional compliance option that will be incorporated within IGCC: Standard 189.1-2009, Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Created by ANSI and ASHRAE with the USGBC and IES, Standard 189.1 takes green building to a new level.




For example, on the critical topic of air barriers, Standard 189.1 mandates the air-leakage performance requirements proposed for ASHRAE 90.1, guaranteeing those big efficiency gains estimated by NIST. To meet the new rules, building air barrier materials must not allow air leakage exceeding 0.004 cfm/ft2 at 0.30 in. water – per ASTM's standard E2178 – according to David Kent Ballast's authoritative Architect's Handbook of Construction Detailing. For building assemblies, Ballast writes, the requirement is less restrictive, at 0.04 cfm/ft2 at 0.30 in. water, which can be tested with ASTM E1677. For an entire building, air leakage should be tested per ASTM E779 at less than 0.4 cfm/ft2.




 




Several states and Canada also refer to these air leakage rules and ASTM standards, and they will become more important over time. The Massachusetts Energy Code and the National Building Code of Canada prescribe material air leakage not exceeding 0.004, and Minnesota Residential and Commercial Energy Code has proposed meeting the same minimum performance. Wisconsin prescribes that leakage through assemblies not exceed 0.06 cfm/ft2 in its state energy code.




 




Clearly, knowledge of ASTM's protocols is vital to building green today – and more than ever when IGCC is published. "It's the testing standards that feed into sustainability," says Sto Corp.'s Terry L. Viness, P.E. "They help us make better choices about the sustainability of our products. And products not listed in the code, or not evaluated by an approved entity, should be scrutinized before they are used."




 




It's the energy, stupid




 




In addition to IGCC and the tightening of air barrier rules, a flurry of local green-building ordinances and the sweeping mandates like the ICC's International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) press building teams to make their buildings greener.




 




Dig down a bit, and new green standards from groups like ASTM, UL and the Canadian Construction Materials Center (CCMC) provide essential metrics for every type of material, assembly and system. On top of all that, there are now valuable, consensus-based model codes for sustainability, including the National Green Building Standard, published in 2008 by ICC, the National Association of Home Builders, and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).




 




Since codes and standards provide a scientific, performance-based rationale for green building, what principles underlie the new rules? Energy efficiency and building durability, say experts like John Tooley, senior building science consultant with Advanced Energy, Raleigh, N.C., are two of the most crucial aspects of green design. They are central to successful building operations, and so should drive design-phase decisions.




 




Durability is hard to quantify, yet codes and standards present minimum criteria for a product's ability to resist rot, freeze-thaw cycles, exposure to sunlight, and the like. A Canadian process standard is currently in development to codify a way to assess durability, but in the meantime, durability criteria are available to inform life-cycle analysis (LCA) and other green building choices.




 




Energy efficiency, on the other hand, is low-hanging fruit. "Energy codes haven't been in the spotlight like they are now, and they're changing, reflecting work going on at ASHRAE and other organizations, and the political climate is influencing that," says John Edgar, Sto Corp's Technical Manager – Building Sciences in Atlanta. Paraphrasing a quotation attributed to 2030 Challenge creator Ed Mazria: "Building green isn't about bicycle racks. It's the energy stupid."




 




This trend affects more than HVAC system design. The IECC, for example, specifies R-values for insulation and enclosures based on climate zone. ASHRAE 90.1 calls for "continuous insulation," known by the shorthand ci, in six of eight U.S. climate zones. This requirement has led to more use of exterior insulated claddings, such as insulated metal panels and EIFS, which deliver the R-values and moisture control traits encouraged by the energy standard.




 




Continuous insulation, explained




 




A few ideas behind today's green codes and standards are universally acknowledged, and one is continuous insulation. "A desire to increase energy efficiency is driving this trend, but durability was one original motivation," says John F. Straube, Ph.D., P.Eng., a building science engineer. "It is now in the codes for energy reasons, but it's also more durable, too, because critical, moisture-sensitive components are maintained at closer to room temperatures."




 




In fact, ci is a requirement for most wood and steel-framed wall construction in the United States, says Straube. Based on requirements in the ASHRAE standards or in the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC), the continuous insulation in wood-frame and steel-frame construction should match the demands of the project's climate zone.




 




For example, steel-framed walls in Climate Zone 5 – which covers Chicago, Las Vegas and Boston – require an R-value of 7.5 to meet the 2009 IBC and IECC. To meet the 2009 version of ASHRAE 189.1 or the upcoming IGCC code mandates, bump up the minimum to R-10 for those cities. Wood-framed walls fall into a similar range of ci insulating values.




 




Green performance attributes – and codes




 




With widespread use of techniques like continuous insulation, the energy efficiency and durability of today's buildings will improve dramatically across the industry, making the world a notch greener. Yet, they're not the only areas where codes and standards propel the green building movement. Other drivers include water and raw material usage, and new local codes and national standards are helping define what constitutes true conservation. Human health and safety is another key area, and building codes and standards – which first and foremost are created to protect the public welfare – are rapidly changing to keep up with new concerns, such as material content with urea formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds (VOCs).




 




Few products have code recognition for overall sustainability, but some may have listings or certifications that ensure their green traits. Testing by the government and recognized groups like Franklin Associates and IAS help verify product claims, though some private labeling organizations may not list products strictly based on performance alone.




 




Codes and standards are different. They offer third-party, neutral, impartial and consensus-based answers – a hefty counterweight to "greenwash" and competing claims so common in the arena of sustainability. The ICC codes, for example, list products that meet key performance and durability criteria, providing a quick yes-or-no reference for products.




 




In assessing materials and systems for green buildings, a detailed review of relevant standards and codes is clearly essential, says John Amatruda, RA, a partner with Viridian Energy & Environmental, Norwalk, Conn. So for project planning, the questions are: Which of the selected products have code recognition? Which of them meet the key standards that drive durability, resource efficiency and human well-being in the final built project?




 




Standards of performance




 




Drilling down to a few examples illustrates how codes and standards help ensure success in green building. Let's start with a few important drivers.




 




Durability. Robust building materials are central to sustainability, especially when they are hidden deep within construction assemblies. If the building is designed to last 50 or 100 years or longer, then the structure, insulation and membranes must last that long, too. If not, the design must provide the needed redundancy.




 




One example is sealants and adhesives. While new products may last five times as long as the materials they replace, they rarely last the full life of the building. "Modern sealants will last 20 years, so it's easier now for people to use sealants instead of flashing," says Roger G. Morse, AIA, president of Morse Zehnter Associates, Troy, N.Y. "But ultimately they'll fail. So to make it a sustainable building, they also needed to use metal flashing to keep water out, and other simple, reliable materials."




 




In the case of air barriers and water-resistive barriers, this is especially critical. If the barrier fails, a cascade effect will undermine the energy efficiency and safety of the entire, formerly green building.




 




For barriers as for any other product, the starting place in the IBC and the IRC is Acceptance Criteria (AC). In this case, AC-212 includes durability measures including accelerated aging and weathering results, water-penetration resistance, racking strength, combustibility and air leakage rates. If the product passes the tests, it gets an ICC-ES Evaluation Report describing the criteria and recognizing that it's an accepted method or alternate. For example, StoGuard is recognized as an acceptable alternate to code-mandated water-resistive barriers.




 




Fire resistance. As an essential aspect of building durability, fire resistance is a basic element of sustainable design – yet one that is often overlooked.




 




In this case, too, the architect or building team should ask, "Does the product have an ICC-ES Evaluation report?" If the answer is no, the manufacturer may not have performed the large-scale fire tests required to demonstrate that their product can be used in non-combustible construction (NFPA 285), and they may not have done any large-scale fire-resistance rating tests (ASTM E119). If the substrate is masonry or concrete, this may be a moot point – but if it's frame construction, it is a risk.




 




Energy efficiency. High-efficiency building systems are important for sustainability. For a truly sustainable building, however, the enclosure also must be engineered and tuned to control a variety of interrelated performance variables. Air tightness and high R-value are critical, as is preventing thermal bridges and excessive solar gain.




 




Codes and standards establish minimum criteria, it is often argued. However, so do all prescriptive standards, including LEED ratings, by definition. More important, the codes provide a framework for what is allowable and prudent – often with built-in advice on how to exceed the minimum. For example, minimum R-values given in the codes can be improved upon by using continuous exterior insulation, such as in an EIFS insulated cladding, with expanded polystyrene panels of up to 12 inches thick, for R-values up to R-48. This approach meets fire-safety codes, is easy to construct, and even meets the call for "ci" – continuous insulation – in ASHRAE 90.1.




 




Air tightness. When required, an airtight envelope is critical to energy conservation and sustainability. Interest in this approach has led to prescriptive and performance-based codes for air barriers and other assemblies over the last few years.




 




Key performance criteria for air barriers are listed in the CCMC Technical Guide for Air Barrier Materials, and, when the air barrier is intended to perform as a water-resistive barrier, ICC-ES AC 212, Acceptance Criteria for Water-Resistive Coatings Used As Water-Resistive Barriers over Exterior Sheathing. In addition to detailing a continuous, structural air barrier, architects should select air-barrier materials such as StoGuard, a fluid-applied, waterproof air barrier material that meets both of these criteria. Basically, that means the material is recognized as a water-resistive barrier in the United States and as an air barrier material in Canada.




 




A close reading of the codes will often shake even the firmest assumptions about green building. For example, the proposed Washington State Energy Code amendments would rule out building wraps and papers because they're not continuous and can't withstand positive and negative wind loads. Similar to the Canadian code, which often presages code changes in the U.S. geared toward energy efficiency or sustainability, the amendments would apply to buildings greater than five stories tall.




 




In another proposed amendment, Washington State could be the first U.S. jurisdiction to require whole-building "leak testing" to ensure the air barrier works as designed.




 




· IEQ and toxins. Keeping outdoors and indoors separate is a key aspect of green building now mandated in many codes. Just as important, however, are indoor-air quality and other environmental factors. In addition to moisture and mold, building products should not bring unsafe levels of toxins or VOCs into occupied areas. Codes vary in their approach to VOCs, however, as do the numerous private groups that certify VOC levels for building materials and products.




 




Many green building professionals have chosen to meet one of the most stringent standards for VOCs, California's SCAQMD Rule 1113, published by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. For architectural coatings, for example, Rule 1113 limits VOC levels to 50 grams per liter – just one-fifth of the Environmental Protection Agency's allowable limit of 250 g/L.




 




Numerous products meet these more stringent limits, in part because architects have promoted and adopted the code in their own work. Systems such as StoTherm EIFS meet the SCAQMD rule, as does the spray-applied StoGuard air barrier.




 




When the codes aren't there




 




It's hard to argue that codes and standards, when carefully applied, don't do a great deal to improve green building. They are vital to ensuring the integrity and durability of a building, for everything from weather and fire to building movement and freeze-thaw cycles, and much more.




 




Yet sometimes codes and standards won't answer a critical question, because they haven't kept pace with every advance in construction materials and methods. So what does the project team do when codes and standards don't help? The answer, surprisingly, is often still in the codes.




 




For example, there is currently no standard for the durability of an air barrier. Clearly, however, this important system must resist rot, movement, wind loads, and more. So to ensure their building enclosures work as part of a sustainable design, many architects and engineers have applied water-barrier standards, such as AC212 and ASTM 2570, which covers their use under EIFS.




 




Similarly, continuous exterior insulation is subject to many factors that might compromise its effectiveness or appearance, such as impacts and scratches. Since there's no standard for exterior ci, many architects apply ASTM E2568, providing a baseline standard for ci performance.




 




Codes and greenwash




 




Why does it matter to apply codes and standards? Ask the professionals who use them everyday in their CDs and spec books. First, they help cut through the misinformation and greenwashing that plagues the sustainability marketplace.




 




Behind the codes and standards are rigorous testing methods developed in a public forum with independent laboratories, code officials, building consultants, and industry input. They give projects a baseline and benchmark for performance from third-party, neutral, impartial and consensus-based resource – exactly what you need in the politically charged, often confusing arena of sustainability. (As one manufacturing executive quipped, "Codes are the Switzerland of the building world.")




The increased use of life-cycle analysis and regional adaptations of the LEED rating system demonstrate that codifying and calculating sustainability is a complex process. And just by following one standard or another, architects can't instantly make a building green.




 




But architects and project teams can achieve sustainability by looking for codes and standards that increase durability, reduce energy and materials needed, and make buildings safer and healthier for occupants. New editions of the codes may include new language and provisions for better, greener decisions. The new omnibus ASTM standards for EIFS adopted by the ICC offer a powerful example: When used as a design guideline, this new provision leads to more durable, energy efficient structures with better IEQ.




Those omnibus standards will help make us green, but it's just one more example. Behind the next 200-year building are materials and construction approaches that have been proven to work – and put into North American codes and standards.

How to Make Your Own Green Energy Source

Wouldn't it be great if we can produce our own green energy source? If we can do that, we don't have to pay electrical bills or gasoline anymore for our cars. While we can buy some of the equipment, the rest will have to be done on our own.

Take solar or wind energy for example. We already know how to harness and make it. If you want to make one, do some research online and then set up the system yourself.

To have solar energy, you will need to buy an inverter, battery, charge controller, solar panels, some wires and support structure. The only difference with wind  energy is that you need a fan. Once you have everything you need, you can put it all together.

If you are not skillful, you will be happy to know that some companies sell the entire system. By buying it from them and having it installed by their experts, you are sure that there won't be any problems the moment you switch it on.

There is one more thing you need before you can use one or the two green energy sources. Before you buy the materials or the system, make sure you have a flat area that is about a hundred square feet or so because it occupies a lot of space.

For those who don't have the space or the budget to use these two energy sources, another option is to create your own biofuels.

Biofuels are used in many countries and they get it from harvesting corn, sugar and other crops. Luckily, you don't need a farm to produce it because you can also make your own using some recycled waste.

A good example of this is vegetable oil which we use for cooking. To turn this into a biofuel, we first filter it by warming up the liquid and then filtering this with a coffee filter. The next step is to remove the water also by boiling it again at 100 degrees for a short period of time.

We need to know the amount of lye present in the vegetable oil and we do this by a process known as titration. When we are done with that, we now mix sodium hydroxide to produce sodium methoxide.

The process of converting used vegetable oil before it becomes a biofuel takes quite awhile and it must be heated the entire time. This is done so the fuel we produce is pure and only when this is achieved that we give it time to cool.

Just how much biofuel we make after all the work varies but you will have an idea of how much you have produced since this is the one you see floating at the top. If there is still some glycerin present, filter it again. From there, you already have your own backyard biofuel which you can use and even sell to those who are just as concerned with the environment as you are.

By making our own green energy sources, we make ourselves less dependent on gasoline in its various forms to power our heater, home or car. Why don't a lot of people do it? Well simply because they don't have the time to make it and would rather rely on someone else to do it for them.

One Women’s Experience: a Look Into Costa Rican Rejuvenation

With the powerful ride of our daily lives, sometimes creating vertigo, our search for an

emotional and physical break, and a combined rationalization to justify it, will continue to rise. Though the ride of life will continue, there are some things we can do to make it smoother from time to time.


For the past few years, I have had the assorted delight of exploits and objection of living in a

small resort town in Costa Rican, one of foreign tourism’s most sought destinations. In my

endeavors in the spa industry both here and in the US, I have found varying assumptions, real life

options, along with what works for that illusory thing we call rejuvenation.


Costa Rica, a country comparable to the size of West Virginia is, in and of itself is a Mecca

of natural wonders made for revivification. With my own inner desire to seek out some renewal for

myself, and being right here in “Mecca land” I decided to take it upon myself to find out what is out there not only for me, but for those around me who look to me for knowledge in this area.


Hundreds of auspicious companies now acknowledge the commitment needed to redirect the

unhealthy and unhappy workforce created by the demands of the job. Many are realizing that these

sedentary and high pressure positions may be causing employees a loss of physical health, leading to further preoccupations and overworked psyches. The return, high cost healthcare, and less productivity. Health oriented firms are taking advantage of this shift by craftily applying well planned, results oriented programs to increase worker productivity and reduce stress, while setting markers to measure goals and savings. Firms will work one on one with your company to implement on site healthcare facilities, work out centers, meditation rooms, weekly massage, nutrition and stress management classes, among other incentives. Giving back to the employee and acknowledging they are more than a 9 to 5. This provocation of our spiritual search and looking into our own behavioral patterns and how they lock us into our external lives is increasing. Our need to reclaim our behavior is a reason to seek places of divine retreat.


We seek rejuvenation centers for solace, to manage stress, detoxify, find alternative healthcare or for motivation for a lifestyle change, all while satisfying our craving for euphoria. What if we could bring about a radical change within ourselves, and let that ebb and flow in our daily lives. What is that worth to us?


From coastal plains to rugged mountains, and over 100 volcanic cones, several that are active, the humble country of Costa Rica depends on tourism to bring in foreign income that allows them to tackle environmental and social issues. The past year has brought that tourism, and foreign direct investment, over 480 million dollars of it. It has also brought advancement, with spas popping

up in rapid succession, and a seeming rush to beat out the next guy. According to the Coyle

Hospitality Group, a New York based market leader in quality assurance, the average person, 57% of

us in fact, have visited a resort or hotel spa 1-5 times in the past year. With spas at almost every edge of Costa Rica, from the south end of the Osa Peninsula, to the far north where you can visit a Four Seasons, I agree we will see our share of the 59% of consumers who now want more time to explore their spiritual side, according to the 2001 Leisure Travel Monitor.


R &R Resorts is the management operation of three well known and highly sought international wellness centers with spa and retreat villas. Providing the total “mind, body, spirit”

connection before it was trendy to include this slogan on every youngling spa brochure. One of their three facilities, aptly named Pura Vida, or Pure Life, a national anthem and frequent greeting for the Costa Rican People, symbolizing to take it easy and enjoy life. In other words most things can wait until tomorrow, not a mentality easily ingrained into our work harder, get more,

puritan roots.


I decided it was time to take advantage of my location and experience this for myself. As I passed through a small country town, they call Cerrysel, I am amazed at how much of this small country still remains for me to see. High green mountains, surrounded by coffee fields,

and winding small roads that lead to a remote hilltop location, needing a little navigation, almost as if you need an exclusive password for the privilege of the location. A seeming world away from my four hour drive from the coast, with fog misted mountains and a quiet calm, I looked forward to sharing with the staff. Having previously arranged a meeting with the general manager and marketing coordinator, I knew I only had the day to enjoy this getaway, because of my schedule.


Promising myself I would make a return visit for the much talked about week of transformation.

Upon my arrival I was greeted with a warm welcome by Manrique Gomez, the GM here for the past

three years with 20 years of management experience. I was immediately taken through the grounds, as we discussed the types of accommodations, classes, treatments and pricing they have to offer.


The walk was colder than I am used to, quiet, with only the wind moving the palm and almond trees

with a perpetual breeze, and a refreshing clear view of the valley and surrounding hills. With a

review of the 22,000 square meter grounds, of comfortable sturdy “toldos” or tents, and pagoda

style villas, 53 in all, I was invited to lunch. In the Garden Restaurant a cozy cafeteria style center, I sat down with some very sincere and enthusiastic staff. More rightly referred to as part of the community, at least that is how they like to view themselves. I was pleased to find some of my favorite combinations, tofu dishes, lots of fresh vegetables, cheeses, fruit juice and salad. A light healthy fare, that blends well with a weeks retreat of healing therapies from Bioenergetics, Watsu, Inner Guidance, Thai, Reflexology, Reflective time and all other customary treatments you may think of.


Everyone I spoke with was honest and open, not at all excessively protective of their

proprietary works as some who shrink from the interest of other trade professionals. Proud of their success and innovative programs they were happy to share. With members of the “community”

from Israel, Australia, USA, Germany, Britain, and of course Costa Rica, they have no shortage of

people who seek a chance to live and work here. Isvari, a Sanskrit word for the feminine of God, is the name the resident yoga instructor takes. Trained in Kripalu, Holistic Nutrition, Danskinetics, and Iyengar theories, she brings an open minded vision to her teaching. When I asked another member, what she enjoyed most here, the response was “touching hearts”, which is what she sees in the responsive and physical difference in her clients, at weeks end. Trained in Israel, Switzerland, and India, she has a friendly face, wide, clear eyes, and a true dedication to her work. Management, instructors, therapists, enthusiasts, solace seekers, and Pura Vida regulars all eat, live, practice, and

heal together.


Built on an old coffee farm, significantly more developed than when it was purchased 20

years ago by the founding couple of R & R Resorts, Pauline and Michael Klegg.

Now a prosperous company, it is comprehensibly managed by a couple of “corporate refugees”,

Rakesh and LuAnn. Based in Dahlonega, Georgia, near the Pura Vida USA wellness center, they

travel monthly to their sister properties in Tulum, Mexico, and Alejuela, Costa Rica. Rakesh, a former corporate financier, and LuAnn a lawyer by training, make for a well designed management

team. For two and a half years they have been behind the properties and programs you can find

available. In speaking with the management team I was able to relate to the dedication and skill it

takes to keep these wellness centers going. With my own recent work in boutique, and resort spa

start up on the Pacific Coast, I’d had my days of rewards and set-backs. The couple, having visited

the Costa Rican property three years ago on vacation, decided to modify their lives and upon their return, applied with R& R Resorts, later finding themselves heading up the project. Attracted to the wellness industry by a desire to do something more thrilling than the routine corporate world, and I’m guessing a little healthy self-interest to do something for themselves, they took it on with enthusiasm. With no misconceptions about the industry, they admit, it is just as hard, if not more, to manage these properties, as it was in high demand jobs. Travel is frequent and quality checks are consistent, along with ensuring that each property reflects and represents what they advertise, and is homogenous with the whole body connection put into place at the original MayaTulum property 20 years ago. The founding couple had some healthy discernment in bringing together yoga, and spa awareness when it was not mainstream, an became an inspiration to others.


LuAnn tells me there are no immediate plans for expansion on the Costa Rica property, but

that they are always looking to improve the look and “deepen their offerings” to the guests, and

leave them with something to take home. As we all know, our guests can be the greatest reward, and

the greatest challenge, all at the same time. The reason they always look for staff with the ability to deal with the public, and amongst it all, smile! A pre-requisite to be a staff member, I am told, is quality training, knowledge, and of course the right attitude. As I’ve heard throughout my career from therapist, to manager, through development and consulting, people can be trained, but if they are inherently unhappy, that will reflect in their work.


It must be working, as LuAnn informs me they consistently receive compliments from

clients around the world on the positive fulfillment of expectation and forceful energy of Pura Vida retreats. From experience I know how hard it can be to execute countless biddings, the feeling to out perform, and surpass your guests expectations. In this aspect LuAnn put it so objectively, “Some may have better rooms than us, others may have better treatments, but it is what we put into it, and the service and caring that our clients receive that make it an experience to remember.”


This is the attitude that has made this one of the most popular destination locations in Central

America, and the management awareness is key.

With the average vacation being 10-14 days out of 365, some of us, myself included prefer a new experience during our time away, where our personal needs will be addressed,

and you can really take some, YOU time. Sometimes that takes seclusion, and lifestyle change,

which is part of what Pura Vida does in taking pride in raising a level of consciousness for their clients, and creating a safe space for transformation to happen. Where as one staff member put it, “giving them time to return to the beautiful person they have forgotten they are”

escape and to allow our overworked minds to be swept away, to contemplate a recent change, a

divorce, work, or life. Each of us will look to have a different expectation filled, seeking our own path, transcending age, health and circumstance. We all need, and deserve to function at our best physiologically and emotionally. Personally I look forward to taking them up on an invitation to return and participate in their wellness program and trying out the ‘Unwrap Journey Paradise” package , floating from massage to wrap to detox steam and facial. Exploring the boundries of my yoga stretches, and taking some time for introspection of my own to re-direct some goals that may have slipped off track.

challenged, you certainly will be hard pressed to find a turkey burger or raw foods juice bar,

especially disadvantageous to those of us living day to day lives here. Whether we are traveling or a long term guest in a foreign location, our well being is within our reach. Inside the borders of this little country I currently call home, I now have one more channel to access in my personal search for the sometimes misleading or unbridled spirit. Rejuvenation is deeply personal to each of

us, as we create our rituals to get through the day, deep breaths when needed, a private minute for a mantra, or scanning trade and travel magazines for the next get away. We find our way.


I look up as I am writing this, into a tranquil ocean cove, a friends’ sloop moored below, the

sun is setting, soon I will see the capricious pattern of shades on the horizon, a bird swoops

in to pick up a wandering gecko, and I move to the sounds of distant titi monkeys, and a subtle

background beat of a locally bought c.d., ‘Sounds of the Coffee Lands’. An echo of breaking surf

moves up the hill, like a chant, a sound that has always been my soul rejuvenation, that wraps me in

contentment. I guess this is the beginnings of my dream, my chance to re-invent myself and

capture the empowerment to appreciate it, and what enables me to provide a center of renewal

for myself and those around me. So my daily ride, once a roller coaster has slowed to a tranquil

merry go round, with an exceptional view… at least for the time being. After all I am working the controls.
