Can You Really Build A Solar Panel For Under $150? Greendiyenergy Review

I looked around, but all of the solar panels I found were really expensive so I decided to wait on going solar and just enjoy my cheaper, less polluting and much more fun way of commuting.
Several months ago I decided to take another look at solar and, while I found solar panel prices are still pretty high, I began reading about how to build your own solar panel. After searching extensively on the internet, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try.

I bought and reviewed all the guides
There is some free information out there, but it tends to be incomplete, not specific enough, or not very easy to follow. I bought one of the online DIY solar panel guides and while it was OK, I found it a bit lacking in detail. So I bought another one and found this one to be very complete and with step-by-step videos, very easy to follow. I decided to share my experience building my homemade solar panel to help other people so I bought all the guides I could find and reviewed them all.
The guide I chose
After buying and reviewing all of the guides, I decided to use GreenDIYEnergy. Why? There are really two reasons. First, it is by far the most comprehensive. There are 17 different components ranging from ebooks to spreadsheet to videos that cover all the important details. The videos are the second reason. They are DVD quality and take you through the whole build step-by-step from start to finish.
How I did it
I ordered the solar cells online and bought the rest of the materials at my local hardware store. I used the measurements and layout suggested in the guide and followed along with the videos through the build process. It was actually easier than I thought it would be once I got the hang of it. It only took one weekend to build the panel and that includes buying parts, cutting and painting the wood, soldering the cells, construction and wiring
How much did it cost?
The total cost for my solar panel was $129. I actually spent more than I had to on the solar cells and bought ones that came pre-tabbed to make the build easier. I also had to buy all the wood so if you have some scrap plywood laying around and tab the cells yourself you could definitely build your panel for less than $100. I looked at some solar panels for sale online and I saved between 50 and 75% by building my own.
After building my panel, what do I recommend?

If you've been thinking about building a solar panel, I would definitely recommend you give it a try. The tools you need are pretty basic: saw, screwdriver, soldering iron (you can pick one up at Radio Shack for about $20 if you don't have one). The whole project was pretty easy with the help of the Green DIY Energy guide.
I think the soldering is probably the part that most people would be worried about. The soldering is covered in a lot of detail in the videos and it is all easy soldering of big wires. After the first cell or two I got the hang of it and the rest went pretty quick after that.
Based on my experience building my solar panel, I highly recommend GreenDIYEnergy. It is by far the best DIY solar panel guide available. The step-by-step videos make it easy for anyone to build a solar panel with basic tools in about a weeked for under $150. If I did it, you can do it too.

To put it simply, the videos look awesome. They are nice and big so you get to see all the important parts with lots of detail and he goes through everything step-by-step.
He covers the parts and tools you'll need, building the container, soldering the solar cells together, assembling everything, wiring and finishing. At the end, he connects the panel up to a voltmeter and you get to see it produce electricity!
Ebooks
The ebooks cover the different parts of a home solar system, building a solar panel, solar electrical, installation, solar tax credits, solar consumers guide, building a home wind generator, wind map resources and websites and more. There are over 200 pages of information and pictures and diagrams are used throughout.
There's just a ton of information here. Pay particular attention to the diagrams showing the layout of the solar cells in the panel and the section on where to get the parts you'll need.
The directions in the ebook go hand-in-hand with the videos so I would recommend watching the videos all the way through and then using the ebooks as reference while you're building the solar panel. The ebooks go through the different types of solar cells, which ones to use and where to buy them cheaply.

Build Your Own Solar Power Panels – Make at Home Do it Yourself Electricity

Building solar panels you need to use common hand tools and inexpensive and easy to acquire materials to build a solar panel that rivals commercial panels in power.

To start building your  solar panels you need to purchase Solar Cells and this information is readily available on the internet.

Solar cells are obviously the most important part and the best place is to search eBay for your solar cells.

It is a good idea to get complete cells for your first project, complete solar cells refer to the tabbing wire already soldered onto the cells. You pay extra but save time when you start to build.

A common sale from ebay is around 73 of 3 X 6 mono-crystalline solar cells but it only  takes a total of 36 - 3 X 6 mono-crystalline solar cells wired in series to make a panel.

Start out with just 9 cells that have had the ribbon wires soldered. Lay the soldered wire end from the front of one cell across the solder points on the back of the other cell.

Continued this until you have a line of 9 cells soldered together. Then made three more lines of 9 cells.

Used a low-Wattage soldering iron (20/30 watt) and fine rosin-core solder and used a rosin flux pen on the solder points on the back of the cells before soldering.

Use a real light touch with the soldering iron.

Note:

Your solar panel should always use the same size and same type of solar cells.

 You should always work out the final wattage, volts, and amps of your solar panel.

Each cell produces about 1/2 Volt. 36 in series would give about 18 volts which is perfect for charging 12 volt batteries.

This type of solar cell is as thin as paper and as brittle and fragile as glass and can be easily damaged.

You will also need ribbon & bus wire and a flux pen that usually comes as a lot on ebay.

When determining the total Wattage of a solar panel you should use this simple electrical equation.

Watts = Volts x Amps

Know any two of the equation and you work out the Third variable.

Directions and easy to follow steps are available from the many energy sites.

Some better than others.

Connecting your home solar power system to the power grid allows you to qualify for net metering in many states.

Net metering measures the excess power you generate with your combination of solar power panels and homemade wind power generator and direct it back into your local power grid.

Information on making solar panels?

I want to get definate instructions on how to make the components and convert my home to solar energy. I know I could hire some one to do this, but frankly I do not have the funds at my disposal to do it. I thought if I could find detailed instuctions I could slowly do it myself (with my husband's help). I have looked into loans for this purpose to no avail. Finding the information on the net could take forever! If anyone knows a site that would give me the information or even a hint on how to start? Any help will be appreciated, but if you have any good links to good information please share them with me..Thanks

I doubt that you are going to want to learn how to dope your own silicon wafers, add contacts and laminate them into PV panels.  I also doubt that you're going to even want the various chemicals to make e.g. cadmium-based cells anywhere near your house (cadmium is a very toxic metal).  In other words, making your own solar panels is not an at-home project.

You can buy solar panels based on cells of several different types.  A link to a Pricewatch-like website for current prices on solar panels is below.  Mounting panels to roofs or pole mounts, running conduit and wires, and installing battery banks and inverters are within the capabilities of skilled laypeople.

What heater is more safe and efficient for a swimming pool?

Solar panels, Electrical or Gas? What brand do you think is the best model? Volume= 80, 000 lts.

Solar is always going to be safest, in terms of possible fire or shock.Depending on where you live though, it may not be efficient as a primary heat source. For example, here in Ontario, most will use it as supplemental heat during the summer season only. It's pretty useless during spring and fall. It's a passive source, so the only cost after initial installation is powering the control box, which is minimal. Enersol is my favorite in this category. Parts are easy to get in all of North America, the material is durable and a good install makes winterizing easy. The unit is geared towards a consumer installation and comes with easy to understand documentation. They also include the automatic control valve made by Jandy. In my opinion, one of the best automatic valves in existence.
Gas delivers more BTU per buck and is a quick way of heating a pool from scratch or maintaining heat during spring and fall. But, there's also a risk of fire or explosion, however slight. In 15 years I've only seen 2 Cabana fires directly related to a gas heater and these were ultimately the home owner's fault by placing combustible material on top of the heater and by doing their own gas hook up. For that size pool you're looking at a 250,000 BTU heater. Hayward, Ray Pak and Teledyne Laars all make reliable gas heaters that are high efficiency. Personally, steer clear of the Pent Airs heaters if it's offered. Nothing but trouble with heat fusible links, poor pilot checking design and doors that are just a pain to open.
Electric, well, it's expensive to run. Watching the hydro meter when it's on will make you dizzy. For that size pool, you're looking at a 50 kW heater. I've never heard of anyone getting zapped by one, but it's always possible with a bad installation. No favorite here, they're all pretty much the same.
