I am looking for a Green Job?

I am looking for a "green" job in the Philadelphia area. I feel strongly improving sustainability and I am very interested in getting involved in changing our planet for the better. I am interested in solar power and thermal energy specifically but I have no experience or extensive knowledge about any of the green fields. I know sales is always a good way to get your foot in the door but its not my strong suit. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me locate a job or position?

During my working life, I have had various different kinds of jobs. I travel a lot, so often end up in an unknown place, needing to find work. What I do, is door to door cold calling, to all the businesses that I think I would be happy working for. I have always got work within 2 or 3 in person calls, as one of the tactics I use, is to offer my services in employment at a very low cost for an initial period of a week or two. Most employers want to get the most for their money, so will take me on, but in that period, I will work hard to prove myself and make them wonder how they managed before I got there. Sometimes, I have dropped my wages down to just £10/$15 a day, which is far below minimum wage, but it gets my foot in the door.
If I was you, looking for work in solar thermal for example, I would visit all the places in your area providing this service, offering myself at a primarily low wage. I would also ask all these places, for any old radiators, bits of piping and such, to take home, and build home made panels yourself. Take photos of the panels you make, to show prospective employers. Once they see you are interested and are willing to work, your chances of getting a job will increase. You might also find people who want the home made panels, to earn a little money which you could use to fund an evening coarse in plumbing. Advertise in any local papers, on shop notice boards and ask everyone you think might be interested in solar, such as the organic food shops staff (ask if they will ask their customers for you, you never know) and even roofing firms (many of these will soon be installing panels as part of their job). If you are really serious and keep trying, you should find the place you want. Good luck...
