What are the steps involved in converting hydro-energy to electrical energy?
Hydro energy is rarely converted directly into work at the point of use. That would require
having the machines that require the energy located right at the place where the energy is
extracted from the water. For example, a saw mill used to be located right next to the river
where moving water could directly turn a wheel to power the mill. But these days, it is far
more common to first convert the energy of the water into a more mobile form so that it
can be distributed to a remote location where it is more conveniently used. For example, the
potential energy contained in water behind a dam is converted into electricity by
passing it thru a turbine first, and then that electrical energy is sent over
wires to an electrical grid where it can be used by multiple users at remote locations.
Because the potential energy contained in the water is first converted into electricity, and then
later used to do work, that energy is being used indirectly.
In another example, water flowing in a stream or river has kinetic energy. This energy can be
used directly to run a paddle wheel in a factory located right on the river, but it is more likely to
be used first to turn the turbine of an electrical generator which produces power that gets distributed
to distant users to perform work. Once again, that would be an indirect use of the hydro energy.
