I cant afford a new solar water heater, How is the recently advertised i-HOT water heating services?
There are 6 ways to heat hot water:
A coil in an existing boiler
A separate hot water tank with it's own burner
A separate tank fed from a coil in the boiler
A small tank near where it will be used (Point of use heater)
A coil sized to have cold water enter and hot water leave.
A solar heating system which could be active or passive
And there are some combinations of the above
I think you might be referring to a system similar to the coil that is intended to give "instant" hot water.
Most of the ones I have seen are either electric or gas. They require a large BTU input and they may reduce water pressure. The trade off is that it is only when you are using the water and you don't pay to keep water hot when you are not using it.
A solar hot water system is expected to pay for itself in savings over a number of years known as the "pay back" period. After this you may only be paying for a heat backup if needed. It may require a larger investment up front. Because it gathers heat from thermal solar pannels and the sun's heat is difuse a tank is usually more exonomical than lots of solar pannels. In this way it is similar to a boiler that feeds a separate tank, but with less heat imput and you don't pay for the heat you must only gather it.
