Using Wind as a Source of Energy

People have been using wind as a source of energy for millennia – from the days of wind-powered Phoenician ships to merchant ships and three-masted ships of the line in navies around the world. Driving through rural areas, you may have seen the occasional windmill out in a farmer's field but it is only recently that people have really begun to understand how they can harness the wind for their personal home or business use.

Cities and states are creating huge forests of wind turbines that use the wind to generate electricity for their residents. Now, commercial and residential units are becoming more and more available and people are using them to generate electricity for home and commercial building use.  In fact, renewable wind energy is the fastest growing source of renewable power of all the modern technologies. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The wind is there but largely goes unnoticed other than being viewed as a hazard. With renewable wind energy, the flow of air passing through wind turbines creates electricity. The stronger the wind, the more the turbines turn and the more electricity you generate. Sure, some areas are subject to stronger winds than others but even where the wind is not so strong, enough energy can usually be generated to make a small wind turbine worthwhile. Once you install your wind energy system, you will have a new respect and appreciation for windstorms.

Municipalities, states and provinces are generally in agreement that residential wind power is beneficial and often offer incentives to home and building owners who are interested in installing a wind turbine system. They often offer do-it-yourself guides so even if you're not the handyman type, you can build your own windmills and start using renewable wind energy to lower your electric bills each month. If you don't feel up to tacking the project yourself, there will be a professional in your neighbourhood who can set it up for you in a matter of days.

Depending on your energy needs, conceivably you could build several wind turbines to power your wind energy system. If you do live in a particularly windy area you can probably generate enough energy to provide for all your electricity needs. It is even possible in some states or provinces that if you generate more power than you need, you could sell the excess back to the utility company. Believe me, watching your hydro meter running backwards can be a very satisfying sight to behold!

Setting up a residential home or small business wind energy system has many advantages. Wind is free. You never have to pay for it. It has virtually no environmental impact. No run-off, spill-off or harmful emissions. No pollution. No greenhouse gases. No methane or carbon dioxide to contribute to global warming. Plus, once installed, a renewable wind energy-generating system will begin to pay for itself and reduce your monthly energy bills.

You can make wind energy news in your own neighborhood by building your own wind turbines. Why pay the utility company when those dollars could be going back into your own pocket? Save money and help the environment.  You can easily do it by installing your own renewable wind energy system to harness the wind to produce all the energy you need.
