how do you make solar cells?
what are the requirements for the matrix of a solar panel (photovoltaic)
is it simply a dark semiconductor with wire (nichrome?) in it
with thin glass for rigidity and light focus
There are several types.
The basic one is a slice of crystalline silicon, doped to form a PN junction.
The back is either metal coated or bonded to metal sheet for strength, the front is coated with a transparent conductor (such as tin oxide) and then strip contacts to allow connections to be made.
Another form is amorphous silicon, coated on a carrier & doped etc as above.
Several companies now use powder or 'ink' (powders in liquid carriers) to form layers on a metal carrier sheet, which are then sintered together in a furnace to form the junction layers.
Some of these use multiple, slightly different compounds to absorb different wavelengths of light to give much higher efficiencies that simple silicon cells, which only absorb a narrow range of light wavelengths.
You can get one of these types literally in rolls to lay out on roofs..
